Switches & Connectors

Switches are the basic electromechanical device used to interrupt and re-engage current in a circuit. They are made from a pair of conductive metal contacts that touch to close (make) an electrical circuit and separate to open (break) the circuit. These metal contacts are often plated with noble metals to ensure high conductivity, resistance to corrosion and hardness.

They can be operated manually, as in the case of a light switch or keyboard button, or they may be triggered by process variables such as pressure, temperature and flow, to automatically control a system like a thermostat. In many cases, switches are designed to have multiple sets of contacts that operate simultaneously or sequentially.

They come in all shapes and sizes–from the tiny switches found on PCBs to the push buttons that control your security system or doorbell at home. Magnetic Coil Converters

Magnetic coil converters transform direct (DC) or alternating current (AC) into mechanical force to drive various mechanisms. They use an inductor or transformer, a coil with multiple wire turns, and a magnetic core to boost the strength of the magnetic field.

Using a core increases the inductance of a coil by several hundred times compared to an air-core equivalent. However, it also introduces side effects such as hysteresis and eddy currents, which need to be taken into account when designing a device. For this reason, “soft” magnetic materials with low coercivity and hysteresis are typically used.

In this paper, an analytical and finite-element model of the magnetic spring force is developed for a converter based on a levitated magnet. The model is investigated in dependence of the converter volume variable capacitor and geometry (disc or ring fixed magnet). A prototype of the magnetic nonlinear energy harvester is realized to evaluate its performance. Results confirm that the behavior predicted by the analytical model is in good agreement with the experimental data for different acceleration and frequency conditions.

Cable Assemblies & Wire Harnesses

Wire harnesses and cable assemblies are essential components that can be found in a wide variety of products and devices. Both are designed to transmit signals and electrical power, but they differ in complexity and use. While a wire harness is comprised of individual cables and wires bound together with tubing, cable ties, or lacing, a cable assembly contains a group of cables fitted with terminals and connector housings to create a unified unit.

While a wire harness may seem like a simple idea, the manufacturing process is complex. A wire harness starts with a blueprint of the desired layout for its wires and cables, and engineers must select the appropriate materials based on the product’s specifications.

During the manufacturing phase, wires are cut to length and stripped of their casing. They are then crimped to terminals and inserted into connector housings using specialized equipment. The assembly is then bonded with tubing, cable ties, or cable lacing to create a finished product. The assembly is then tested to ensure its quality and functionality. It is then ready to be used in a customer’s device or application.

Locks & Fasteners

Despite the best efforts of manufacturers, many bolts, screws, and nuts will loosen over time in vibration-prone applications. To prevent loosening, a number of electromechanical components suppliers produce locks and fasteners designed to resist vibrations and shocks.

Prevailing torque locking fasteners use interference with the mating threads to prevent loosening. This can be achieved with either a metal design (flex top locknuts and flanged nuts), or a non-metallic one. The latter include a captive undersized nylon washer or pellet in the screw head, and these require a slightly higher tightening force to be removed.

Another option is a thread locker, which fills the minuscule gaps between the threads with a thermosetting plastic that, upon curing, toughens to protect the fastener assembly. This is ideal for applications where a loose bolt might damage the item it’s holding down, such as in an electrical connection. These fasteners are also popular in the automotive and truck industries. A variant is Belleville washers, which have a conical design that exerts spring pressure when compressed. These are less expensive and easier to install, but have less resistance to loosening.
