Bentonite Waterproof Liner

Bentonite waterproof liner is a popular choice for construction projects due to its many benefits. In addition to providing protection against water infiltration and contaminant migration, bentonite liners are also easy to install and maintain.

Durability

When properly applied, bentonite offers excellent protection against ground water intrusion. But, as with any exterior coating, small gaps or incomplete coverage will allow water to seep in and cause damage. Exterior excavation to provide full bentonite coverage is extremely disruptive and expensive. Bringing heavy equipment onto your property turns your yard into a construction site, and it will disrupt the normal flow of your landscaping and drainage system.

Sodium bentonite waterproof liner is also very durable and can resist earthquake activity, making it a good choice for building construction in areas prone to seismic activities. Lastly, bentonite is an environmentally friendly material that does not contain any harmful chemicals, making it an ideal choice for environmentally sensitive projects.

Research carried out at three slope locations shows that liners made of sand-bentonite mixtures are capable of providing a high level of liquidproofness. However, it was not certain whether this low hydraulic permeability would be preserved for a considerable period of time after the liner had been constructed. To test this question, sand bentonite liners built at VAM at Wijster in 1982 were examined for soil structure formation, plant roots and animal activity. In addition, their density and the hydraulic permeability were measured on the basis of samples taken from the liner. The results showed that the permeability factor still corresponds to the design gradient and more than meets the present standard for maximum design percolation losses.

Puncture Resistance

Bentonite liners can self-heal holes or penetrations to a certain point, but only if you have the right amount of pressure on them. This is why it’s important to bring in soil or other material to provide some confining weight and prevent the bentonite from expanding too much.

Geosynthetic clay liners consist of two durable geotextile outer layers and a uniform core of natural sodium bentonite clay. When hydrated under a confining load, the bentonite swells to form a low permeability layer with the hydraulic protection of several feet of compacted clay.

Ideally, the geotextile that is responsible for holding the bentonite liner should have a high tensile strength and be capable of withstanding a particular amount of tension. This will ensure that the bentonite is not displaced from its place in the structure and allows for a high level of puncture resistance.

The thickness of the geotextile should be adequate to protect the liner against abrasion and puncture. A minimum of a 150-gsm or heavier geotextile is recommended. A heavier geotextile may also be necessary if the liner is located in an area that experiences heavy rainfall or has a high water table.

Moisture Resistance

Bentonite’s natural capacity to hydrate with moisture (the kind that’s found in soil) and form a strong, impermeable barrier means it’s a great choice for waterproofing basements. Most basement issues are caused by water moving through concrete walls, but bentonite liners stop the water before it can get in, so you can avoid any costly damage.

Swelltite is a bentonite sheet membrane composite that features a thick layer of sodium bentonite compound integrally bonded between a tough geomembrane liner and a clear poly siliconized release liner. It’s a virtually zero VOC waterproofing solution, so it’s safe to use indoors and out. It’s also puncture resistant and easy to install.

One of the biggest benefits of bentonite liners is that they can be installed in a fraction of the time and with a much smaller crew than a rubber liner, which requires a large team to unroll and extend the liner. Additionally, bentonite liners are incredibly flexible and can resist punctures and tears better than rubber liners.
