The nozzle

The nozzle of a spray gun is one of the most important parts of the machine. The nozzle is where the paint leaves when it is sprayed and where the spray pattern is determined. It is also where the paint mixes with the air to create the fine spray that is sprayed on the piece being painted.

The atomization of the liquid paint occurs in the tip of the spray gun where the air hits the filaments or films of the fluid and causes them to collapse into a fine mist. This is what gives the spray gun its ability to apply a finely textured, smooth surface.

Many different types of spray gun nozzles are available and can be used for various purposes. The nozzle size will determine the spray pattern and amount of fluid that is released. It is important to select a nozzle that matches the type of coating being applied. A thinner coat may require a smaller nozzle, while a thicker coat might need a larger nozzle.

It is important to check the nozzle opening size before buying a gun. A good place to start is a 1.4 mm fluid nozzle. This will provide a good balance between the amount of paint being applied and the level of atomization. If you are going to be applying thicker coats it might be a good idea to speak with your equipment provider as they may recommend a slightly larger nozzle to allow for more production and less overspray.

The air cap

When spraying a paint job, the air cap is the piece that shapes the spray pattern. The air spray gun cap has precision machined holes that vary in size and play a critical role in the quality of your finish. Larger air caps produce wider patterns that are great for covering big surfaces quickly while smaller air caps provide narrower spray patterns that can be used to create a detailed or controlled finish.

Choosing the right air cap size for the coating you’re applying will help ensure professional atomization and buttery smooth topcoats. Most good gun manufacturers will have charts on their product sheets that recommend an air cap set up based on the type of coating being applied. Use these charts as a starting point, but be sure to experiment with different combinations until you find what works best for your particular application.

The air cap also houses the pressure gauge for the spray gun. You can purchase an air cap/gauge combination that is pre-assembled by the spray gun manufacturer or make one yourself by drilling a hole in the cap and tapping a thread in the hole. Then, you can attach any commercially available air pressure gauge that can read 0-30 psig to the nipple of the cap. This will allow you to keep track of your atomizing air pressure and prevent over spraying.

The hose

The hose of the spray gun connects to the compressor and feeds air into the gun. It is important to get a high-quality, professional-grade hose. This will help to avoid air leaks and provide proper transfer efficiency. It should also be lightweight to reduce fatigue in the arms and shoulders of the operator.

The size of the hose depends on the job you’re doing and the gun itself. For example, a water-based paint requires less air than lacquer or enamel paints, so you’ll need a smaller hose. Usually, the hose is made from polyurethane or neoprene. These materials are lightweight, flexible, and resistant to chemicals. They also offer good resistance to heat and cold.

Before you start spraying, test your gun on a scrap piece of wood or paper/cardboard. This will give you an idea of how the gun is functioning and if there are any issues that need to be addressed before you begin your project. Having a turntable helps to make this process much easier and will allow you to quickly turn the piece of wood or paper in different directions to check the quality of the paint application.

If you’re using a spray gun for painting, you should check the recommended PSI on your spray can and the gun instructions. This will ensure that you have the correct amount of pressure at the gun for an even and consistent application.

The gun body
