They are also commonly used as a factor of authentication in 2FA and MFA systems.

RFID Technology

Passive tags, on the other hand, have no battery and rely on electromagnetism to communicate with a reader. When a passive tag comes within range of a reader, the electromagnetic energy from the reader’s antenna triggers the IC on the card to turn on and transmit an information-carrying signal back to the reader.

Because passive tags rely on electromagnetic energy to function, they are susceptible to interference from other electronic devices. To counteract this, manufacturers of passive RFID products have developed ways to design and engineer tags, readers, and antennas that are less sensitive to interference. Some people use Faraday cages to store their RFID key fobs, which work by blocking any unwanted signals. This is a great way to prevent your keys from being cloned by thieves.

Active High Frequency Key Fob Tag

A passive card will need to be close to a reader in order for it to work, while an active RFID tag will have its own battery that powers it and can transmit signals at a distance.
