Weldability

Typically, H-beams have a flat base with two parallel flanges that taper inward. They’re formed by hot or cold rolling and have a uniform wall thickness, which helps ensure consistency and durability. Because of their unique construction, they can support heavy loads and withstand extreme SGCC galvanized steel plate weather conditions. They can also help reduce the amount of concrete used in a building’s foundation, which is good for environmental sustainability.

The machinability of S275JR U-shaped steel is very good, especially with the addition of lead (Pb). The alloying elements in this grade allow it to be cut using shears and flame cutting methods without losing too much strength or ductility. It can be welded easily by SMA, MMA, MIG, and MAG welding techniques. When welding, it is necessary to preheat the material up to 180degC in a furnace, resistance heating mats, or gas torch to avoid hot cracking and distortion. Despite the low amount of carbon in this grade, S275JR is an oxidizable material. Ultrasonic fatigue testing is a useful tool for monitoring fatigue behaviour in steels. The results obtained are comparable to the results from other testing methods, including low-frequency SN curves.

For the S275JR+AR grade with a mirror surface finish, the ultrasonic fatigue limit was found to be slim = 340 MPa. This was reached at 8.21 x 107 cycles with a crack starting on the surface or subsurface, and at 9.39 x 108 cycles with a crack originating close to the surface. These values are substantially lower than the mean stress effects calculated using power-law extrapolation for this grade, and are likely due to the absence of pits that act as stress concentrators.
